A strong connection exists between Switzerland and Kosovo, as the Kosovar population is one of the largest diasporas in Switzerland (estimated at 300,000 people). This is due to the strong migration from Kosovo to Switzerland in the 1990s.
Switzerland’s exports to Kosovo have grown by 158% in the last 10 years, amounting to a total of CHF 62 million in 2021. This is a good trend. However, the Covid-19 crisis has hit the Kosovar economy very hard, causing an economic setback. A recession of -6.9% (the first since the country’s foundation) could be observed. Nonetheless, foreign direct investment rebounded slightly in 2020. Switzerland remains in second place with a total of 576.7 million euros (including 67.5 million euros in 2020) in direct investment.
In addition, a lot of money flows into the country through remittances from migrants.
