Slovakia has a small, extremely export-orientated and very open economy. Over the last 10 years, it has shown average annual growth of 3-4%. The most important sector is the automotive industry. Exports have also developed strongly, with growth of 30% in goods exports and 57% in services exports between 2010 and 2020. The high export ratio of around 90 per cent of GDP underlines the strong dependence on foreign countries, which has been reduced somewhat in recent years.
For Swiss companies and investors, the IT and financial sectors in particular, but also the cleantech sector, continue to offer interesting fields of activity, with the high level of education of the labour force and the still comparatively low wage costs in the EU contributing to the attractiveness of the location. However, a worsening shortage of skilled labour, accentuated by a brain drain, is making the search for suitable workers more difficult.
